You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown
at Mount Aloysius College
Book & Music by Clark Gessner
Based on the Comic Strip by Charles Schulz
Directed by Prof. Nathan Magee, M.F.A., Musical Direction by Kelly Hartman
The costumes for You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown require very little research, as almost everyone knows the iconic Peanuts characters. The problem with this, however, is... almost everyone knows the iconic Peanuts characters! Making the characters instantly recognizable while bringing them to life was a fun and unique challenge. Finding the perfect shirt or dress in just the right color and just the right size was quite the test of patience. Special thanks to my student costume assistant Samantha Aurandt for all of her help with the process!
The director and I initially decided that each of the characters would have his / her own color, much like they do in the comic strips. The Peanuts characters also each have their own unique hairstyles. Lucy and Sally wore wigs, while Linus (played by a female) and Schroeder were extremely cooperative in getting haircuts. We let Charlie Brown keep his hair, fearing that an actual bald-headed kid might look a bit bizarre. I put Snoopy in a white leotard so she could easily do her tap dance routine. Her hair in pigtails served as ears, and her only "dog" make-up was a tiny black nose. The three ensemble members, who often served as props and set pieces, were three Woodstock birds. I clothed them all in yellow pants (females in leggings, male in scrubs) and yellow hoodies to easily carry props on stage. Their hoodies were topped with yellow feathers like Woodstock's spikey hair.

The entire cast performs the opening number.

Everyone has made it to the school bus on time... except Charlie Brown!

Snoopy dons the role of the World War I Flying Ace. Two of the Woodstock birds fly Snoopy's "plane," while the third portrays the Red Baron.

The entire cast performs the opening number.
